GED Preparation
What is a GED?
The GED is a certificate of General Educational Development. Successful completion of the five-part GED test (reading, writing, social studies, science, and math) earns a GED certificate. The GED certificate acts as an equivalent of a high school education and is usually accepted in place of a diploma.

What is GED Preparation?
The GED Preparation program prepares adult students 18 and older to take the five GED exams. In these classes students review reading, math, grammar, writing, and test-taking. GED students generally have between 8th and 12th grade-level skills.

When are the classes?
Classes usually meet twice a week for five hours per week, days or evenings. Check the quarterly class schedule for exact times. (In the online schedule, look under the Department listing "Adult GED Exam Preparation.")

How old do I have to be to get a GED?
Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Students under 19 must follow the underage admissions procedures of NSCC.

Do I have to take a class before I take the GED Exam?
No, if you feel you are ready to take the GED test, contact the Testing Center to learn about the testing process and make an appointment.

How much will it cost?
There is a $25 program tuition. There is also a charge for the GED Test. GED Test information is available on the Testing Center site.

How do I get started?
To register for GED preparation classes you must first come to an orientation. If English is not your first language, an ESL placement test may be required before entering the GED Preparation classes. For more information and dates of upcoming orientations, contact an ABE/GED/ESL Advisor.
